Brisbane suburbs

Electricians in AspleySettled houses, plenty of townhouses.

Aspley filled with suburban homes from the 1960s, and nearly a quarter of its homes are now townhouses. More than a third are owned outright, so a lot of the work is on houses and boards that have been in place for decades. Tell us what's going on, and we'll match it with one licence-checked local electrician who does that job.

About Aspley

Once North Chermside

The suburb was called North Chermside until the mid 1970s. By the 1960s, suburban development needed new schools and churches, and a brickworks had run on Brickfield Road since the 1930s.

On the creek flats

Aspley sits on flat ground south of Cabbage Tree Creek, centred on Little Cabbage Tree Creek, about 13 km north of the CBD.

A townhouse suburb too

At the 2021 Census, 72.1% of homes were separate houses and 23.8% townhouses, semis or terraces. Hardly any were flats.

Long-time owners

36.4% of homes were owned outright and 23.9% rented. The median age was 43. Energex supplies Aspley: outages on 13 62 62.

Townhouse electrics

In a townhouse complex, your switchboard might be inside, on an outside wall or in a shared meter area. Before an electrician starts, they need to know where it is and whether they'll need access to anything shared, so check with the body corporate.

If you're adding a split system, an EV charger or an induction cooktop, ask the electrician whether your unit's supply and board can carry it. In a townhouse, the answer can depend on the complex's main supply, not just your own board.

Questions to ask before an older Aspley board is upgraded

  • Which circuits will have safety switch protection afterwards, and how many safety switches?
  • Will there be spare room for what I might add, like solar or a charger?
  • Is there any chance the old backing board contains asbestos, and how will you handle it?
  • How long will the power be off?
  • Will I get a certificate of testing and compliance with your contractor licence number on it?

Where we'd begin

In a house you've owned for years, we'd book a switchboard check before anything else. In a townhouse, we'd make one call to the body corporate first. Both are quick, and both save a wasted visit.

Questions

Straight answers.

Does a paid-off Aspley house still need new smoke alarms?

Yes. Queensland's rule covers owner-occupied homes too: interconnected photoelectric alarms in every home by 1 January 2027.

Old black backing board behind my fuses. Should I worry?

Leave it closed and don't drill or poke at it. Dark boards made before 1987 can contain asbestos, so tell the electrician when you book and they'll plan around it.
