Altona's homes and network
From shacks to suburb
Growth was fastest between the 1950s and 1980s. Before that, many houses were holiday shacks, and some were later extended into permanent homes.
Mostly detached, some townhouses
61.1% of occupied homes were separate houses and 30.1% were semi-detached, terraces or townhouses in 2021. 31.0% were rented.
Low and on the bay
Altona sits on the western shore of Port Phillip at an elevation of 8 m, beside wetlands and Kororoit Creek.
Powercor runs the local substations
Powercor lists Altona and Altona Chemicals zone substations, and its Laverton station supplies Altona Meadows. Faults go to Powercor on 13 24 12; your bill confirms your distributor.
Signs an older Altona house has outgrown its wiring
- Fuses you pull out and rewire, or no safety switch on the board.
- Lights that dim or flicker when the heater or kettle goes on.
- Power points that feel warm, buzz or smell of hot plastic. Stop using them and get them checked.
- Double adaptors and power boards running everything in a room.
- A sleepout or extension that seems to run off a single circuit.
- A dark, brittle switchboard backing, which may contain asbestos.
Extended shacks are the tricky ones
When a small holiday house gains a bedroom here and a kitchen there over the decades, the wiring tends to get added to rather than redone. That can leave long runs on one circuit and joins in the roof space that nobody remembers making.
A periodic assessment to AS/NZS 3019, the standard Victorian rental checks use, is a sensible way to see the whole picture before you renovate. If you rent the place out, the rental check is required every 2 years anyway.
Our take for Altona
If you've bought one of the older houses, we'd get a full electrical inspection before the renovation plans are final. Fix what it finds, missing safety switches first, then design the new rooms around a board with space to spare.
