Glenroy's housing story
1946 to 1950
Australian National Airways sponsored housing for its staff in Glenroy West in 1946, and the War Service Homes Commission started building across the railway line in 1950.
The Commission years
In 1951 the Housing Commission took control of 2226 hectares in the Broadmeadows municipality, including Glenroy north, and finished about 1700 houses in Glenroy and Jacana by 1957.
Today's mix
At the 2021 Census, 58.4% of homes were separate houses, 33.0% townhouses or semi-detached and 8.4% flats. 37.5% were rented.
Council
Glenroy is in the City of Merri-bek, with Moonee Ponds Creek on its western edge.
Old house or newer townhouse: what usually needs doing
| 1950s house | Newer townhouse | |
|---|---|---|
| Switchboard | Often fuses, or an early breaker board with few safety switches | Modern board; spare room varies |
| Common jobs | Safety switches, a new board, rewiring, more power points | EV charger, extra circuits, outdoor power, data |
| Ask first | Is there asbestos in the board backing? How much wiring is original? | Is there room on the board and the supply for a charger? |
| If rented | 2-yearly safety check, and breakers plus safety switches on power and lights | The same 2-yearly check applies |
Rentals in Glenroy
With more than a third of homes rented, the landlord rules matter here. Before a lease is signed, Victorian landlords must tell the renter when the last electrical safety check was done and whether any of its recommendations are still outstanding.
Where we'd start in Glenroy
In an original house, a switchboard check and safety switches come first, before any renovation. In a townhouse, check the board's spare capacity before you buy an EV charger or an induction cooktop, because there may not be room for both.
