A fallen line in fire weather
Treat any line on the ground as live and keep at least 8 metres away. Call 000 if there's fire or anyone's in danger, then Western Power on 13 13 51.
Living with power in the hills
Forest on every side
Kalamunda is on the eastern edge of the metro area, about 25 km from Perth. The City's Fire Hazard Reduction Notice requires a fuel-reduced asset protection zone of 20 metres around buildings, with works due by 1 November 2026 and kept up to 31 March 2027.
Homes from the 1960s and 70s boom
The Shire's population more than tripled between 1961 (7,524) and 1976 (26,448), so a lot of homes date from that growth.
Long-term owners
49.1% of homes were owned outright at the 2021 Census, the median age was 49, and 89.3% were separate houses.
Solar on the scarp
Postcode 6076 has 5,658 small-scale solar systems on the Clean Energy Regulator's count to 30 September 2026.
Outages up here, and what helps
Western Power lists planned outages 10 days in advance and automatically signs more than one million homes up for SMS alerts. Make sure you're on the list.
If a network outage runs 12 continuous hours or more, the State's extended outage payment may apply. Claims go to Western Power within 60 days.
Ordinary grid-connected solar shuts down when the grid does. If staying powered matters to you, talk to an electrician about a battery with backup circuits for the fridge and lights.
If it were our hills house
Before fire season, we'd have the switchboard checked for RCDs and surge protection, and look at any private pole or overhead line on the block. If long outages are a real problem for your household, get a battery and backup circuits quoted while the weather's cool.
