Maleny's power and homes
A substation being replaced
The zone substation on Landsborough-Maleny Road was built in 1948. Its replacement is going in over three stages and should be finished by mid to late 2027; the new one is designed to get power back faster after outages.
Very wet
Wet years can bring 4,000 mm of rain, with up to 300 mm falling in 24 hours.
Older owners
The median age was 59 in 2021, and 55.4% of homes were owned outright. 91.4% were separate houses and 18.3% were rented.
From timber to dairy
Maleny was proclaimed a town in 1891 and was a timber town until the early 1920s, then a centre for dairy and fruit growing.
Energex territory
When the hinterland goes dark, report it to Energex on 13 62 62. Lines brought down by trees go to 13 19 62.
Why your power trips when it pours
When water gets into an outdoor power point, a garden light or the cable to a shed, current leaks to earth and the safety switch cuts the power. That's the switch doing exactly what it should.
If it happens every wet spell, note which switch trips and what's on that circuit. An electrician can test the circuit, find the wet fitting and replace it with one rated for outdoor use.
Don't keep resetting a switch that won't hold. A circuit that trips again straight away is telling you something's wrong.
Sheds, pumps and long cable runs
Acreage around Maleny often means sheds, water pumps and gates a long way from the house. Long runs, ageing underground cable and outbuildings with no safety switch of their own are where hinterland faults tend to hide.
A sub-board in the shed, with its own safety switch, means a fault out there doesn't take the house down with it.
If we lived up on the range
We'd have every outdoor and outbuilding circuit checked for a working safety switch before the wet season, and keep a torch and Energex's outage number handy. In a long-held home, we'd also make sure the smoke alarms are interconnected photoelectric ones before 1 January 2027.
