Electricians in NambourA mill town's houses, and their switchboards.

Nambour was settled in 1870 and ran on its sugar mill from 1897 to 2003, and traditional Queenslander houses are still part of its character. Older homes often mean older switchboards, and in Queensland the board can decide what an electrician is allowed to do. We match Nambour jobs with one licence-checked local electrician who works on older homes, where we have one.

Nambour's homes and history

A mill town

The Moreton Central Sugar Mill ran from 1897 until 2003, and its cane tramway closed at the end of 2001. The former mill workers' houses in Mill Street and Bury Street are heritage-listed.

Queenslander character

Council's proposed local plan keeps heritage and character protections, and says redevelopment in the inner suburbs should preserve traditional Queenslander character where required.

Taller near the station

The same plan proposes town centre height limits of 4 to 10 storeys, with units and apartments closest to the centre and the railway station.

Renters and young families

At the 2021 Census, 38.0% of Nambour's homes were rented and 35.0% owned with a mortgage. 66.3% were separate houses and the median age was 40.

Storms and the network

Nambour was among the suburbs hit by a May 2021 storm that cut power to more than 5,000 Sunshine Coast homes. Energex supplies the town, and its outage line is 13 62 62.

Why the switchboard comes first in an old Queenslander

Queensland law stops a licensed electrician doing installation work in a home with no approved safety switch for the power points, unless the job includes fitting one or an exception such as an emergency applies. So in an old house, one extra power point can start with the board.

Original boards may still have ceramic fuses you pull out and rewire. Black backing boards made before 1987 can contain asbestos, and some old fuses hold asbestos inside the carrier, so don't drill or scrape anything around the board. The electrician will tell you how they'll handle it.

Timber houses can also hide old rubber-insulated cable in the walls and ceiling. If you're renovating, ask for the wiring to be tested while the walls are open. Old wiring covers the signs.

Renting out a Nambour house

With almost four in ten homes rented, the landlord rules come up often here. If the power points aren't protected by an approved safety switch, the owner must have one put in within 90 days after a tenancy starts.

Smoke alarms must be tested and cleaned within 30 days before each new tenancy, and by 1 January 2027 every home needs interconnected photoelectric alarms.

Where we'd start in Nambour

In an older Nambour house, we'd have the switchboard looked at before planning anything else, because the safety switch rule can turn a small job into a board upgrade. If the board needs replacing anyway, that's the time to add circuits for air conditioning or an induction cooktop, in one job instead of two.

Questions

Straight answers.

My Nambour house still has old fuses. Is it unsafe?

Not automatically. But rewireable fuses date from before safety switches were common, so your power points may have no protection against shocks. An electrician can check what's there and whether an upgrade makes sense.

Can an electrician add a power point without upgrading my board?

Only if an approved safety switch already protects the power points, or one goes in as part of the job. Queensland law only lets the electrician skip that step in limited cases, such as an emergency.

I'm buying an older house in Nambour. What should I check?

Read the seller's written statement on whether a safety switch protects the power points. If there isn't one, you'll need one within 90 days of taking possession. A pre-purchase electrical inspection shows you the board and wiring first.
