Coogee's housing
Art Deco and onward
Villas and terraced gardens gave Coogee an Art Deco feel by the 1920s and 1930s, and apartment blocks have kept coming since.
Mostly units, mostly rented
Of 6,206 occupied homes in 2021, 79.9% were units and only 10.6% were separate houses. 54.5% were rented.
Heritage houses in between
Coogee has many heritage-listed nineteenth-century houses. In Berwick Street, two mid-1920s houses were placed under an interim heritage order in 2022 and listed in December 2023.
On Ausgrid
Coogee is inside Ausgrid's network area. Report street outages and fallen wires on 13 13 88.
Power's off in your Coogee unit: work through it
Check the street
If neighbouring buildings are dark too, it's Ausgrid's outage. Check its map or call 13 13 88.
Check your board
If only your unit is out, look for a tripped safety switch or breaker in your unit's board. Reset it once.
If it trips again
Unplug everything, reset, and plug things back in one at a time. If it still trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring and needs an electrician.
If it's the whole building
Tell the building or strata manager. The main switchroom is common property.
Old blocks, new demands
A 1930s building was wired for lights, a radio and maybe a fridge. Today's units run air conditioners, induction cooktops and a drawer full of chargers. Units get upgraded one at a time, so it's common to have a modern board in one flat and original circuits next door. If you're renovating a Coogee unit, ask the electrician whether the cabling back to the main switchroom needs attention too; that part may need strata's sign-off.
Tenants: the short rules
An electrical fault in a NSW rental is an urgent repair, and so is a safety switch that doesn't work. Report it to your agent in writing. For smoke alarms, the landlord has two business days to fix one once they know it's faulty.
What we'd sort first
In an older Coogee block, we'd find out from the strata when the switchroom and common wiring were last looked at, before spending on the inside of a unit. If the building side is sound, the rest is straightforward. Tell us the job and we'll match one licence-checked local electrician who works in strata buildings.
Want a specialist to sort it?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
