EV charger installation in SydneyYour network and your building decide more than the charger does.

In Sydney, two things shape a home EV charger job: your network and your building. Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy each have their own rules on when they need to hear about a charger, and nearly a third of Sydney homes are apartments, where strata approval comes first. A licensed electrician who installs chargers regularly works through both before anything's ordered.

Sydney homes and what they mean for a charger

Apartments and strata

At the 2021 Census, 30.7% of Greater Sydney's homes were flats or apartments. In NSW you need strata approval for a wall charger in an apartment. On 16 October 2026 the government announced Parliament had passed a bill giving owners the right to install charging on their own lot without unreasonable objection, but it gave no start date.

The building grant has closed

The NSW EV ready buildings grant for strata buildings with 10 or more apartments closed when Stage 2 applications shut on 8 October 2025. If your committee is still counting on it, it's gone.

New estates

Box Hill has seen fast residential growth, Oran Park Town has replaced the old raceway, and the Camden council area had Australia's strongest population growth in the year to June 2021. In a new build, the easiest time to plan a charger circuit is before the plaster goes up.

Older homes in between

Ausgrid's note about homes over 20 years old that haven't been rewired covers a lot of Sydney. If yours is one, expect the electrician to look at the meter and switchboard before talking about chargers.

Charging from your own solar

Endeavour Energy's flexible exports let eligible solar homes export 10 kW per phase most of the time, and they become the default for eligible new and upgraded systems from November 2026. On Ausgrid's flexible option, a single-phase home can export up to 10 kW. Either way, the NSW Government's advice is to charge during the day when you have solar.

Adding or upgrading solar at the same time? Ausgrid says that from late 2026, new and upgraded systems need an inverter that can talk to the network over the internet. Plan the two jobs together so the board is sized once.

The loan, and what isn't on offer

NSW Home Energy Saver loans are interest-free, up to $15,000 over up to 10 years, and a Level 2 charger is on the approved list, as is a switchboard upgrade. They're for owners, landlords included, with a combined taxable household income of up to $210,000 a year, and the work must be done by an electrician with a current NSW licence.

We haven't found any other current home charger rebate in Sydney, so be wary of a quote that leans on one.

What to ask a Sydney charger installer

  • Am I on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, and does this charger need to be notified or approved?
  • Is my supply single-phase or three-phase, and does the meter need to change?
  • For a unit: what will the strata committee need to see from you?
  • Can the charger use my solar surplus now, or later if I add panels?
  • Will the CCEW be emailed to me when it's lodged?

How we'd go about it

We'd sort out the strata side or the network rules before picking a charger, because those decide what's possible. Then we'd size the charger to the car and the daily drive, and have an electrician with EV charger experience, which is what Energy NSW recommends, check the board and the meter. If a Home Energy Saver loan might fit, we'd read its guidelines before booking anything.

Questions

Straight answers.

Does a Sydney wall charger need a Level 2 electrician?

Usually not. A licensed electrician installs the charger. A Level 2 Accredited Service Provider only comes in if the supply from the street needs changing, such as a move to three-phase. The NSW Government calls a wall charger Level 2 charging, which is a different thing altogether.

Can my strata committee say no to a charger?

For now you need strata approval in NSW. The bill passed in October 2026 gives owners the right to install charging on their own lot without unreasonable objection, but no start date has been announced. Until then, put the electrician's written plan in front of the committee as early as you can.

Which chargers suit an apartment car space?

Schneider Electric aims its Schneider Charge Pro at apartment buildings and its standard Schneider Charge at houses, for one example. Whatever the brand, Energy NSW says to use only chargers carrying the Regulatory Compliance Mark. Home EV chargers compared lists the makes.
