Houses with mortgages
81.2% of homes in The Hills Shire were houses at the 2021 Census, and 46.1% were owned with a mortgage.
Acreage
In the Rural North, the RFS says suburbs such as Kenthurst, Dural and Annangrove often have blocks over 1 hectare backing onto bushland.
Fast growth
The former farming and grassland suburbs of Box Hill and Nelson are growing fast.
Windstorm
After the 26 November 2025 windstorm, Endeavour's overnight repairs concentrated on Western Sydney, the Hills District, the Hawkesbury and South-West Sydney.
Private poles and long driveways
Endeavour Energy says around 100,000 power poles on its network are privately owned, alongside the 300,000 it owns. On a big block, the pole and line between the street and the house may well be yours.
Work on the overhead service line is done by a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider, not a general electrician. Private power poles explains how to tell what's yours.
Generators on bigger blocks
Long outages after storms make generators popular out here. Endeavour Energy says a generator should never be connected to a switchboard unless a licensed electrician has installed an isolation switch, because otherwise it can send electricity back up the lines. An electrician can fit the inlet and isolation switch so changing over is safe.
What we'd do in the Hills
On acreage, get the private pole and the generator set-up sorted before storm season, not in the middle of an outage. In a new estate, plan the charger and solar around the switchboard from day one.
