Electricians in RydeOld settlement, post-war brick.

Between 1945 and 1952 Ryde Council built 599 houses under its own housing scheme, including 173 brick houses in what's now Denistone West. Those homes, the Federation and Inter-War houses in its heritage areas, and the apartments that now make up 55.7% of homes all bring different electrical jobs. Tell us the kind of house and the job, and we'll match it with one licence-checked electrician near Ryde who suits it.

Heritage item? Tell council first

Ryde is one of the oldest settlements in NSW after Sydney and Parramatta. Its heritage items and conservation areas are listed in Schedule 5 of the Ryde Local Environmental Plan 2014, and a review that took effect on 27 November 2020 added 24 items and took the conservation areas from five to eight.

Council's heritage information sheet says some minor works and repairs to heritage items can be done by qualified tradespeople without a development application, but only after council has been told in writing, with photos, and its Heritage Officer has replied in writing. Moving a meter box or adding outdoor lighting on a listed house is worth checking first.

Council-built houses

Council built 599 houses between 1945 and 1952, and 360 more went up through a Ryde loan scheme.

An old settlement

Estates were subdivided from the 1870s, and growth followed the first Gladesville Bridge in 1881 and the railway in 1886.

More units than houses now

Flats were 55.7% of homes in 2021 and houses 35.4%. 45.1% were rented.

In a post-war brick house

Houses from the post-war years were wired for a radio, a few lights and maybe a fridge. Many have been partly rewired since, often without the board being touched. Common jobs are switchboard upgrades, more power points in kitchens and bedrooms, and new circuits when gas appliances go electric.

Ausgrid notes that homes over 20 years old that haven't been rewired may need a meter upgrade when an EV charger goes in, and meter changes go through your retailer.

Where we'd start in Ryde

In a post-war house, have the whole installation tested before planning a kitchen or a charger. If it's a heritage item, write to council about anything that changes the outside before booking the work.

Questions

Straight answers.

Do I need a new meter for an EV charger in Ryde?

Possibly. Ausgrid says older homes that haven't been rewired may need a meter upgrade, and your retailer arranges it through its approved installer. The electrician will tell you after checking the board and supply.

Can a sparky just get on with work on my heritage-listed house?

Inside work rarely needs council. For external changes, Ryde's process is to write to council with photos and wait for the Heritage Officer's written reply before minor works go ahead without a DA.
