Kedron's history and homes
Tram estates
The tram reached the Kedron Park Hotel in 1914. Kedron View Estate (1925), Scriven's Paddock (1926) and the Richmond Estate (1928) followed.
Kedron Brook
The suburb is centred on Gympie Road and the brook it's named after. In 2022 the Kedron Brook Floodway broke its weir at several points and water reached houses nearby.
Flats and renters
At the 2021 Census, 59.9% of homes were separate houses and 30.0% flats or apartments, and 42.9% were rented.
On Energex's network
Kedron is in the City of Brisbane, inside the network Energex runs. A street-wide outage is reported on 13 62 62.
Interwar houses, modern loads
Houses from the 1920s were wired for lights and a few power points. Air conditioning, an induction cooktop or an EV charger asks far more of the wiring and the board, so an electrician who works on older homes checks the cable, the board and the supply before adding anything big.
Brisbane's character overlay protects houses substantially built in 1946 or earlier, which keeps a lot of these homes standing. A renovation is the natural time to replace old circuits.
In the streets near the brook, anything that took water in 2022 should have been tested. If you're not sure it was, have it checked now.
Safe to do yourself, and what isn't
You can
- Reset a tripped safety switch once, after unplugging what was running.
- Press the test button on each safety switch.
- Change a light bulb, which Queensland law says isn't electrical work.
- Fit wireless smoke alarms that have a sealed 10-year battery.
Leave to a licensed electrician
- Old cable, fuses and the switchboard.
- New circuits for big appliances or a charger.
- Hardwired smoke alarms.
- Testing anything that's been under water.
Where we'd start in Kedron
In an interwar house, we'd start with a wiring and board inspection before planning any new appliance. It tells you whether the house can take the load, or what has to change first.
