Nundah's homes and history
Railway boom
The 1882 railway brought a suburban building boom to Brisbane's northside, with working-class families buying on reasonably sized lots.
Queensland's first public house
In 1909, Surrey Street in Nundah became the site of the first public housing dwelling in Queensland.
Now mostly apartments
At the 2021 Census, 60.5% of homes were flats or apartments, 23.5% separate houses and 15.8% townhouses or semis. Just 14.8% were owned outright.
Floods along the canal
The Schulz Canal runs through Nundah. In 2022 the Kedron Brook Floodway broke its weir, and the Toombul Shopping Centre flooded and closed for good.
Energex's network
Nundah is in the City of Brisbane, inside the network Energex runs. Street-wide outages go to Energex on 13 62 62.
Two very different jobs
In a cottage, the wiring may come from several eras. Ask an electrician who works on older homes to test it before you add a heat pump, an induction cooktop or air conditioning. Queensland's asbestos guidance treats homes built before the mid-1980s as highly likely to contain asbestos materials, so the old board needs care.
In an apartment, your unit's board and circuits are generally yours to sort, but the main board, risers and common lights belong to the body corporate. If several units lose power together, it's more likely a building or network problem than yours.
After water. Ground-floor units and car parks in low spots are where flooding meets wiring. Anything wet stays off until a licensed electrician has tested it.
Signs to get someone out quickly
- A burning smell or scorch marks on a power point or switch.
- A safety switch that trips again as soon as you reset it.
- Lights flickering in several rooms at once.
- Any tingle from a tap, appliance or metal fitting. Report shocks to Energex on 13 19 62, and call 000 if someone is hurt.
Our take for Nundah
If you're renting, report faults to your property manager in writing with photos, so there's a record. If you own a cottage, have the wiring tested before the renovation plans are finished, not after.
