What's particular to the Redlands
A coastal city of suburbs
Redland City covers 537.2 square kilometres. Its main suburbs are Capalaba, Cleveland, Victoria Point, Thornlands and Redland Bay, and more than 6,000 people live on North Stradbroke, Coochiemudlo and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.
Cleveland's growth
When Cleveland's rail service came back around 1980, the town had over 5000 people, and it was nearing 10,000 by 1992. Building of the Raby Bay canal estate began in 1983.
Owners who stay
At the 2021 Census, 83.9% of Redland homes were separate houses, 33.7% were owned outright and only 22.9% were rented. The median age was 43.
Heritage and fire
The council keeps a register of local heritage places, and the city's listed sites include Whepstead Manor and the Grand View Hotel. In late 2018, about 3200 hectares burned on North Stradbroke Island.
Jobs that tend to come up across the Redlands
Switchboard upgrades before big additions. A house owned for decades often has the board it was built with, and solar, a battery, a pool pump or a second air conditioner are when that becomes a problem. On Energex's network, basic home solar connections allow up to 10 kVA of inverter capacity and 5 kW of export per phase.
Smoke alarms by the 2027 deadline. Queensland's interconnected photoelectric rules cover owner-occupied homes too, not just rentals. If yours are hardwired, the replacements must be hardwired by an electrician.
Outdoor power and lighting. If you're adding power to a deck, a pool area or the garden, anything outside needs weatherproof fittings and safety switch protection, and it's licensed work from the switchboard out.
On the bay islands
If you're on Coochiemudlo, Russell, Macleay, Lamb, Karragarra or North Stradbroke, say so when you send your job. We'll only match it with an electrician who actually works there.
Our take on the Redlands
If you've owned your home a long time, get the switchboard and smoke alarms done together before 2027, then plan the solar or battery on top of a board that can take it. It's one booking instead of three.
