The northside, in brief
Who counts as northside
Wikipedia's list of northern suburbs includes Aspley, Bald Hills, Bracken Ridge, Chermside, Clayfield, Everton Park, Kedron, Mitchelton, Nundah, Sandgate, Stafford, Wavell Heights, Windsor and Zillmere.
Homes
The ABS 'Brisbane - North' area had 86,969 occupied homes in 2021: 69.2% houses, 13.7% townhouses or semis and 16.6% flats.
Kedron Brook
It runs from Upper Kedron through Enoggera, Stafford, Grange, Lutwyche, Wooloowin and Toombul to Moreton Bay at Nudgee Beach. In 2022 its floodway broke its weir in several places.
Postwar hills
Stafford Heights' Somerset Hills Estate of 243 lots was drawn up in 1950, one of the postwar subdivisions on higher ground.
Storms
Alfred brought a 93 km/h gust to Brisbane Airport on 7 March 2025, and the 24 November 2025 storms caused widespread damage across Brisbane's north.
What northside homes usually need
Postwar boards. Plenty of the northside was built after the war, from Stafford to Everton Park. Queensland's asbestos guidance says homes from before the mid-1980s are highly likely to contain asbestos materials, so treat an original switchboard with care and let the electrician check it.
Rental compliance. With about a third of homes rented, the Queensland landlord rules come up often: an approved safety switch within 90 days of a tenancy starting, and interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms.
Flood checks near the brook. If water reached your wiring in 2022 and it hasn't been tested since, book that first.

Where we'd start on the northside
Work out your house's era first. A postwar board is the place to begin; a newer one usually means you can go straight to the job you actually want done.
