Brisbane suburbs

Electricians in CapalabaA 1970s growth suburb, half a century on.

Capalaba was mostly rural until the Leslie Harrison Dam was finished in 1968, and the 1970s brought a rush of new homes, shops and light industry. A lot of those houses are still standing, often on the switchboard they were built with. Send us the job and we'll find one licence-checked local electrician who specialises in it.

Capalaba's homes

The dam that started it

The Leslie Harrison Dam on Tingalpa Creek, completed in 1968, gave the then Redland Shire a major water supply and led to big residential, commercial and industrial growth through the 1970s. Capalaba Park Shopping Centre opened in 1981.

Houses and townhouses

At the 2021 Census, 77.7% of homes were separate houses and 18.6% were townhouses or semis. Only 2.5% were flats.

Mostly owner-occupied

42.4% of homes were owned with a mortgage and 29.9% owned outright, with 25.9% rented. The median age was 39.

Council and power

Capalaba is in Redland City, with Tingalpa Creek as its border with Brisbane. Energex supplies it: call 13 62 62 for an outage.

What a 1970s house usually needs

A switchboard check. Boards of that age may still use fuses, have no safety switches, or have been extended in pieces. If you're adding an air conditioner, an induction cooktop or a charger, the board is the first thing an electrician looks at. Old fuse boxes shows what to look for without opening anything.

Asbestos awareness. Dark backing boards made before 1987 can contain asbestos. In Queensland, a business arranging asbestos removal has to use a licensed removalist unless it's a small job of non-friable material, so tell the electrician what you've got before they quote.

More power points and lighting. Homes from that era were built with fewer outlets than families now use, and power boards daisy-chained across a room are a sign it's time for more.

Townhouses

In a townhouse complex, the switchboard for your home may sit in a shared meter room or on an outside wall. Let the body corporate know before work starts, and check whether the job touches anything shared.

If it were our Capalaba house

We'd find out what's on the board before planning anything else. If it's still fuses, or one safety switch covering only the power points, we'd upgrade that first, then add the new circuits in the same visit.

Questions

Straight answers.

How do I know if my Capalaba switchboard is original?

Look through the meter box door without opening any cover inside. Ceramic fuses you pull out, or no switches with a test button, usually mean an older board. Take a photo and send it with your request.

Do I have to upgrade the board when I sell?

Not the whole board. In Queensland the seller must tell the buyer in writing whether an approved safety switch protects the power points, and the new owner has 90 days to have one installed if not.
