Tarneit's homes and power

Farmland until the 2000s

In its rural days the district never topped 200 people, and a severe fire in the 1950s destroyed much of what stood. Large scale subdivision began in earnest in the early 2000s, and the population tripled to 21,690 during 2006 to 2011.

Big houses, young mortgages

At the 2021 Census, 64.7% of occupied homes had four or more bedrooms and 56.9% were owned with a mortgage. Another 29.5% were rented, and only 0.3% were flats.

Several Powercor substations reach in

Powercor's Truganina zone substation supplies Tarneit, and its Werribee, Laverton and Melton substations reach into parts of it as well. A new Rockbank East substation is planned by 2031 for the growth to the north-west. Faults go to Powercor on 13 24 12.

Still growing

Tarneit, in the City of Wyndham, is expected to pass 63,000 people by 2031, so new streets and new connections will keep coming.

What new homes in Tarneit usually need

An EV charger is the most common request. It needs its own circuit, so the first check is whether the board has the room and the supply has the capacity. Solar Victoria says any electrician can fit one, but experience with chargers matters.

Solar is next. New systems on Powercor's network since October 2024 need an approved inverter that supports CSIP-AUS, or they're held to zero export, and Powercor's flexible exports option needs a reliable internet connection.

If you rent out a near-new home here, the 2-yearly electrical safety check still applies. Newer wiring makes it quicker, not optional.

Adding to a new home: your part and the licensed part

You can

  • Plug-in garden lights and timers
  • Picking the charger and where the car will park
  • Finding your distributor and meter details on the bill

Leave to a licensed electrician

  • A dedicated circuit for an EV charger
  • Outdoor power points and fixed outdoor lighting
  • Any change to the switchboard or solar system

If we were fitting out a Tarneit home

We'd bundle the jobs. If a charger, outdoor power and extra lights are all on the wish list for the next year, get one electrician to look at the lot in a single visit, because they all draw on the same board and the plan might change once they see it.

Questions

Straight answers.

Will Powercor limit how much solar I can export in Tarneit?

It can. Customers given a 0 kW pre-approved export limit can choose flexible exports, which allows up to 10 kW when the network has room, as long as the inverter is compatible and online. Your installer handles the application.

My Tarneit rental is only a few years old. Does it need an electrical check?

Yes. Since 13 October 2026 the 2-yearly electrical safety check applies to every Victorian rental, whatever its age. The check follows section 4 of AS/NZS 3019.
