Electricians in HillarysBetween the dunes and Marmion Avenue.

Most of Hillarys was built between the early 1970s and the mid-1990s, a short walk from the ocean. Western Power counts salt build-up on insulators near the coast among the riskier settings for pole top fires, which can black out streets after light rain. Here's how to tell whether an outage is the network's problem or your house's, and what a local electrician can actually fix.

What's particular about Hillarys

Built from 1971 to the mid-1990s

Hillarys was gazetted in 1971 as part of the Whitford development. Growth followed Hillarys Boat Harbour, built for the 1987 America's Cup, and by the mid-1990s the north-west and south-west were fully developed.

Pole top fires near the coast

Western Power says pole top fires start when light rain or humidity mixes with dust, salt and pollution on insulators. On 4 March 2024 about 70 of them cut power across Perth and the Perth Hills.

Long-term owners in big houses

At the 2021 Census, 89.4% of homes were separate houses and 67.8% had four or more bedrooms. 44.8% were owned outright, 13.5% were rented, and the median age was 44.

Solar and batteries in 6025

The Clean Energy Regulator counts 7,722 small-scale solar systems in postcode 6025, plus 752 solar batteries recorded between July 2025 and September 2026.

The power's gone. Network or house?

  1. Look at the neighbours

If their lights are off too, it's the network. Report it to Western Power on 13 13 51, and stay at least 8 metres from any fallen line.

  2. Only your house? Check the board

A tripped safety switch can be reset once. If it drops out again straight away, leave it off.

  3. Unplug, then try again

Faulty appliances are a common reason a safety switch trips. Unplug everything on that circuit, reset, and plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit.

  4. Still won't hold? Call an electrician

A fault that keeps tripping with everything unplugged is in the wiring or a fixed fitting. That's licensed work.

Solar rules that touch Hillarys roofs

If your system is new or upgraded since 14 February 2022 and has 5 kW or less of inverter capacity, it has to be able to be turned down or off remotely as a last resort in a grid emergency. The State says that's never been needed outside routine testing.

From 1 May 2026, new or upgraded solar and battery systems up to 30 kVA must also support modern grid communication standards. If you're replacing an inverter or adding a battery, ask the installer whether it counts as an upgrade and what changes as a result.

And if a long network outage does hit, the State's extended outage payment, run by Western Power, covers outages of 12 continuous hours or more. Claims must be lodged within 60 days.

What we'd do in Hillarys

We'd check Western Power has your mobile for its outage texts and press the safety switch test buttons every three months, as Building and Energy recommends. If the board trips in damp weather while the rest of the street stays lit, that points to moisture in your own wiring or outdoor fittings, and it's worth getting an electrician to find it.

Questions

Straight answers.

Why does Hillarys sometimes lose power after light rain?

Often it's a pole top fire. Salt, dust and pollution build up on insulators, and light rain or humidity sets it off. It's a network fault, so Western Power repairs it.

My solar shut down in an outage. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. Grid-connected systems are designed to switch off when the grid goes down, so line crews aren't put at risk. If it doesn't restart once the power's back, call your installer or an electrician.
