Electricians in Port KennedyFamily homes on the edge of the wetlands.

Port Kennedy was called Becher until 1990, and much of it backs onto wetlands, a golf course and the Rockingham Lakes Regional Park. Homes here are mostly big and owner-occupied, and plenty of the electrical jobs happen outside: power and lighting for the patio, the shed or the car, and solar on the roof above. We'll match yours with one licence-checked local electrician who does that kind of work, where we have one.

Port Kennedy's homes

Becher, then Port Kennedy

The suburb was named Becher in 1974, after Point Becher, and renamed Port Kennedy on 1 June 1990. It's in the City of Rockingham.

Wetlands and parkland

Its linear wetlands are partly inside the golf course and partly protected in the Port Kennedy Scientific Park, which with Lake Walyungup is part of the Rockingham Lakes Regional Park.

Large homes, few flats

At the 2021 Census, 93.7% of homes were separate houses, 78.6% had four or more bedrooms and none were flats. 51.9% were mortgaged and 22.4% rented.

Solar and batteries in 6172

The Clean Energy Regulator counts 3,973 small-scale solar systems in postcode 6172, plus 382 solar batteries recorded from July 2025 to September 2026.

Power and light outside

Outdoor power points, garden and security lights, a supply to the shed and a charger in the carport are all fixed wiring, so they're licensed electrical work in WA. Plug-in solar garden lights and a timer on an existing outdoor socket are fine to sort yourself.

Every new circuit should sit behind a safety switch, and WA requires all power point and lighting circuits to have RCD protection before a house is sold, with at least two RCDs. If the outdoor power trips the safety switch after rain, leave it off and get an electrician to find the water.

Solar exports and the new meter

A home system on the main network can export up to 5 kW only under an agreement with the retailer, otherwise 1.5 kW, and it falls back to 1.5 kW whenever communication with the retailer drops out. If your export looks capped, that's usually why.

Western Power is also fitting more than 1.2 million advanced meters by mid 2027. Its own technicians fit them, the power is off for about 30 minutes, and the new meters can flag service connection faults remotely. You don't need an electrician for the meter swap itself.

Our take for Port Kennedy

If you're adding outdoor power, lighting and a charger over the next year or two, we'd get one electrician to plan them together, with weatherproof fittings and the right safety switch protection from the start. It's tidier, and it means the board is only opened once.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can I put in outdoor lights myself?

Only plug-in or solar ones. Anything wired in, including fixed garden lights, sensor lights and outdoor power points, is licensed work in WA.

Western Power changed my meter. Do I need to do anything?

No. Western Power's technicians fit the advanced meters and the power is off for about half an hour. If something on your side stops working afterwards, check the safety switch first, then call an electrician.
