Marrickville, house by house
Ausgrid country
Inner West Council says Ausgrid manages powerline clearing across the Inner West. Ausgrid's faults line is 13 13 88.
A brickworks suburb
Large estates were subdivided for workers' housing from the late 1880s. The Porter's Brickworks Estate, between Wardell Road and Marrickville Park, followed between 1928 and 1935.
Units and terraces
In 2021, 47.2% of homes were flats, 18.5% semis, terraces or townhouses, and 32.0% houses. 46.6% were rented.
Little solar
Inner West Council said in 2021 that only 7% of its listed dwellings had rooftop solar.
Old terrace and cottage wiring: what to watch for
- Rewireable ceramic fuses in the meter box
- Very few power points per room
- Switches or light fittings that are warm or buzz
- A safety switch that trips when it rains
- Power boards and extension leads doing the work of missing outlets
Solar on a heritage street
In a heritage conservation area, Inner West Council's rules say panels on the street-facing roof must follow its front roof plane policy and sit flush with the pitch, with dark, non-reflective frames. An electrician can't change those rules, so check them with your installer early.

If it were our terrace
If your terrace still runs on ceramic fuses, we'd have the board replaced and safety switches added before any kitchen or bathroom renovation. Those rooms bring the heaviest loads and the most water, and an old board protects against neither.
