Mosman in context
Federation-era streets
Settlement spread east from Milsons Point from the 1870s, helped by the ferries, and rows of shops and Federation homes went up around 1900. The Military Road shopping strip is itself a conservation area.
Flats from the late 1950s
Multi-storey flats began in the late 1950s and became enough of a public concern that controls were introduced. Today 52.0% of Mosman's 11,544 occupied homes are flats and 34.9% are houses.
A third rented
33.1% of homes were rented in 2021, and 38.3% were owned outright.
Ausgrid network
Mosman is inside Ausgrid's network area. Report a street outage or fallen line to Ausgrid on 13 13 88.
Rewiring a house in a conservation area
Inside the house, rewiring is ordinary licensed work, and the CCEW at the end is the same as anywhere in NSW. The care is in how it's done: fishing new cable through without cutting into original ceilings, cornices and joinery, and placing new power points where they won't fight the room.
Outside is where heritage rules come in. Mosman Council has a process for heritage works without consent for some minor works, but anything visible from the street, like moving a meter box or adding solar, is worth checking with council before the electrician books in.
In a Mosman unit block
Your unit's own board and circuits are the owner's to maintain. The main switchroom, common lighting and car park power belong to the owners corporation. For an EV charger, NSW currently requires strata approval for a wall charger in an apartment, and a bill passed in October 2026 is set to stop unreasonable objections once it starts. No start date had been given.
Ask before you say yes
- Have you rewired houses of this age before, and how do you run cable without damaging plaster?
- Will any of the work change what's visible from the street?
- Which circuits need replacing now, and which can wait?
- Will I get the CCEW, and can it be sent to my email?
Our suggestion
For a Federation or inter-war house in Mosman, we'd choose the electrician for their experience with old homes before anything else, and ask for a staged plan rather than a single big job. Tell us the job and your postcode, and we'll match you with one licence-checked local sparky who rewires older homes.
Want a specialist to sort it?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
