The Aldinga area, by the facts
Mostly Aldinga Beach
Aldinga Beach had 10,667 people in 2021 against 764 in Aldinga itself. It sits about 41 km south of the city, between Aldinga Reef and the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park.
Lots of empty houses
On census night 2021, 790 of Aldinga Beach's 5,004 dwellings were unoccupied. Holiday houses can sit empty for weeks, which is when a tripped safety switch or a failed fridge goes unnoticed.
Houses, mortgages and renters
90.9% of occupied homes in Aldinga Beach were separate houses. 42.4% had a mortgage and 27.5% were rented, with a median age of 39.
Lightning in 2014
After about 80,000 lightning strikes across South Australia on 26 October 2014, almost 3000 homes were still without power the next day, most of them in Aldinga Beach and Port Willunga.
Electrical jobs that suit a coastal holiday town
Holiday houses. A safety switch that trips while nobody's home can mean a freezer of spoiled food and an alarm system without power. An electrician can find what's causing nuisance trips, and put the fridge or freezer on its own circuit so it isn't knocked out by a fault elsewhere.
Surge damage. After a lightning storm, it's common to find a dead modem, a TV that won't turn on, or a safety switch that won't reset. Surge protection at the switchboard is worth discussing with the electrician.
Growing families. For the full-time homes, the usual jobs apply: more power points, air conditioning circuits, outdoor power, and solar.
After a storm takes the power out
Check whether it's just you
Look at SA Power Networks' outage map, or ring 13 13 66 to report it. If the street is out, there's nothing an electrician can do yet.
Stay away from fallen lines
Treat any line on the ground as live, and keep people and pets well back.
When power returns, check your board
If your safety switch has tripped, reset it once. If it won't hold, unplug everything and try again before calling an electrician.
If we had a holiday place in Aldinga
We'd ask an electrician to look at why the safety switch trips, if it ever has, and to put the fridge and any security system on circuits that a faulty kettle can't knock out. Then we'd ask a neighbour to check the house after any big storm.
