After a big storm in Victoria Point
Stay clear of fallen lines
Assume any fallen line is live. Report it to Energex on 13 19 62, or 000 if someone's in danger.
Check whether it's just you
If the neighbours are out too, it's a network outage. Report it on 13 62 62 or look it up on Energex's Outage Finder.
Leave wet circuits off
Anything that has taken water stays off until a licensed electrician has tested it.
Book an electrician for your side
Damage inside the house or to the board is licensed electrical work. Say if the board is old, so they come prepared.
Victoria Point's homes
Mostly built from the 1980s
Queensland Places records about 2,500 people by 1980 and another 1,000 over the next five years. The Koala shopping centre opened in 1986.
An older population
Wikipedia noted six retirement villages in 2007, and 36.3% of homes were owned outright at the 2021 Census.
Houses and townhouses
80.8% were separate houses, 15.9% semi-detached or townhouses, and 19.9% were rented.
Alfred's toll on the Redlands
More than 8,000 Redland homes were still without power the Tuesday after landfall, and council crews dealt with 300 fallen trees affecting power lines.
What's worth doing before the next storm season
Smoke alarms that wake everyone. By 1 January 2027, every home here needs photoelectric alarms that are interconnected, so one sounding sets them all off. If yours are hardwired, a qualified electrician has to fit the replacements.
A check of an older board. The Queensland Government says most switchboards installed before 1990 are very likely to contain asbestos. If yours dates from the suburb's 1980s growth, mention it when you book.
Surge protection. Storms bring power surges. A surge protector at the board is worth asking about while an electrician is there for something else.
Where we'd start in Victoria Point
We'd sort the smoke alarms first, since the deadline is fixed and they matter most at night. If the board's from the 1980s, have it checked in the same visit.
Want a specialist to sort it?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
