Robina was laid out from 1980 as one of Australia's first master-planned communities, so its oldest houses are now more than four decades old and many still run on their original boards. Tell us the job and we'll put you in touch with one licence-checked local sparky who handles that work regularly.

What's different about Robina

Planned from scratch

Developers bought 20 km2 of grazing land west of Broadbeach in 1980. The name was gazetted in 1985, and Robina kept growing by 4.8 per cent a year between 2001 and 2011, so homes range from first-generation to fairly new.

Townhouse country

At the 2021 Census, 31.6% of occupied homes were semi-detached, row or terrace houses or townhouses, against 54.6% separate houses and 13.7% flats. A third were rented.

Solar on a lot of roofs

Clean Energy Regulator figures show 7,298 small-scale solar systems installed in postcode 4226 up to September 2026, plus 682 home batteries since July 2025.

Storms and supply

Robina was among the Gold Coast localities activated for disaster assistance after the Christmas 2023 storms. Energex runs the poles and wires; report outages on 13 62 62.

What comes up in Robina, and why

Boards built for a different house. A switchboard from the 1980s was sized for fewer appliances, no inverter and no car on charge. Before a battery or EV charger goes in, an electrician needs to confirm there's room on the board and enough supply. Switchboard upgrades for solar and EV chargers walks through what that check involves.

Safety switches on every circuit. Older boards often protect the power points but leave lights or the oven unprotected. Upgrading so every circuit has a safety switch is one of the most common jobs on homes of this age. Safety switches explains the options.

Townhouses need sign-off first. Queensland's body corporate fact sheet says the wiring serving your lot can still be common property, so a charger connected to it needs approval. Read your by-laws before you book.

Before you get a battery or charger quote

  • How old the switchboard is, and whether every circuit has a safety switch
  • Whether the home is single phase or three phase
  • How much solar is already on the roof, and the inverter size
  • For a townhouse, a copy of the by-laws and who grants approval
  • A written quote naming the certificate of testing and compliance you will get at the end

What we'd do in Robina

If your home dates from Robina's early years, we'd get the switchboard assessed before choosing a battery or a charger, not after. Planning one board for everything you'll add is far simpler than reworking it each time something new arrives.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar in Robina?

Often, yes. It depends on your inverter, the switchboard and Energex's connection limits, and a combined system of 10 kVA or more needs a generation signalling device. A licensed electrician can tell you after looking at what's there.

Do I need body corporate approval for an EV charger in my Robina townhouse?

If the charger connects to common property wiring, yes. The committee can approve it if conditions are met, such as not causing a nuisance or interfering with other owners' supply. Otherwise it goes to a general meeting.
