Electricians in SouthportOld houses on the side streets, rented units everywhere else.

Most Southport homes are rented units, but the streets around Chirn Park and the old railway precinct still hold Queenslanders and fibro bungalows from the early 1900s to the 1960s. So the work splits two ways: landlord safety jobs in the blocks, and tired switchboards in the houses. Tell us what's going on and we'll match it with one licence-checked local electrician who does that kind of job.

Fibro house? Leave the meter board closed

The QBCC says a house built before 1990 has a good chance of containing some asbestos, and nobody can tell just by looking. Dark electrical backing boards made before 1987 are one known source. Don't drill, cut or unscrew anything around an old meter board, and mention the age of the house when you book so the electrician can plan for it.

Southport's homes and power

A CBD of rented units

At the 2021 Census, 54.6% of occupied homes in Southport were flats or apartments and 57.9% were rented, against 33.1% across Queensland.

Fibro streets from the 1950s and 60s

The council's 2010 heritage review describes the racecourse precinct, falling towards Loders Creek, as mainly 1950s and 1960s fibro bungalows, and the Chirn Park area, settled in the 1960s, as pattern-book fibro houses.

Queenslanders near the old station

Houses in the railway station precinct mostly date from around 1900 to the interwar years: high-set timber Queenslanders with the odd low-set fibro bungalow.

Wind and hail off the Broadwater

Alfred pushed a 107 km/h gust across the Gold Coast Seaway on 7 March 2025, and the 31 October 2020 hail alerts covered Southport.

Energex supply

Southport sits inside Energex's South East Queensland network. A street-wide outage goes to Energex on 13 62 62, and a fallen line to 13 19 62.

The jobs that come up most in Southport

Old boards in the bungalows. A 1950s or 60s house that has never had its switchboard replaced may still run on ceramic fuses with no safety switch. In Queensland, an electrician can't do installation work in a home with no approved safety switch for the power points unless the job includes fitting one, so the board often becomes part of the job. Old fuse boxes explains what changes.

Landlord work. Much of the work here is for owners. If the power points have no approved safety switch, one has to go in within 90 days of a tenancy starting, and every new or renewed lease needs interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. Electrical work for landlords has the full list.

Units with shared wiring. Queensland's body corporate fact sheet points out that wiring serving your lot can still be common property. Before booking anything bigger than a light or a power point inside your unit, ask the building manager where your wiring stops.

If it were our Southport house

In one of the fibro bungalows, we'd book a switchboard check before anything new goes in: no extra air conditioner or oven circuit until the board is sorted and you know whether the backing board contains asbestos. In a rental, we'd get the safety switch and smoke alarms done in one visit, before the next lease is signed.

Questions

Straight answers.

My Southport unit has no power but the neighbours do. Who do I call?

Check your own safety switches and breakers first. If one has tripped, unplug everything on that circuit and reset it once. If it won't hold, you need an electrician. If the whole building or street is dark, that's Energex on 13 62 62.

How do I check a Southport electrician's licence?

Ask for their electrical contractor licence number and confirm it's current on the Electrical Safety Office's online Electrical Licence Search before agreeing to any work. If you can't find them, the Office takes calls on 1300 362 128.
