Electricians in CockburnOne council area, two generations of homes.

Cockburn isn't one suburb. The City of Cockburn runs from Hamilton Hill and Spearwood to Success, Atwell and Beeliar, and its population grew roughly five-fold between 1954 and 1971, then more than doubled again between 1991 and 2021. Tell us your suburb and what's happening, and we'll match you with a licence-checked local electrician who does that job.

The City of Cockburn, electrically

Big suburbs

In 2021 the largest were Success (11,340), Hamilton Hill (11,327), Spearwood (10,944), Atwell (9,287) and Beeliar (8,617). The council area runs to the Indian Ocean, about 8 km south of Fremantle.

Two growth spurts

The population went from 5,047 in 1954 to 25,011 in 1971, then from 50,217 in 1991 to 118,091 in 2021. So there's a layer of 1960s housing under a much bigger layer of newer homes.

Mostly houses

At the 2021 Census, 81.3% of homes were separate houses, 11.6% townhouses or similar and 6.5% flats, across 48,394 private dwellings. 25.2% were rented.

Salt on the insulators

Western Power is trialling silicone treatment of insulators in Cockburn, Rockingham and Swan, because dust and salt build-up near the coast makes pole top fires more likely.

Matching the job to the house

If your home went up in the 1960s or 70s, the switchboard is the first thing to look at. Rewireable fuses, no RCDs and a dark backing board are the signs. Installing RCDs, or fixing a fault found when testing one, is work for a licensed electrical contractor.

If it's a newer estate home, the questions are about capacity: whether a charger, battery or more solar fits inside Western Power's 63 amp single-phase standard supply.

Either way, an outage after light rain in a dry spell is often a pole top fire. That's Western Power's to fix, on 13 13 51.

Questions worth asking any Cockburn electrician

  • What's your EC contractor licence number, and who's the licensed electrician doing the work?
  • Is this job notifiable, and will you lodge the notices with Western Power?
  • When will I get the Electrical Safety Certificate?
  • Does my board have room for this, or does it need upgrading first?

Where we'd begin

Tell the electrician your suburb and roughly when the house was built. In Cockburn, that one detail changes the likely job more than anything else. If you're not sure of the age, a photo of the switchboard settles it quickly.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can you find an electrician anywhere in the City of Cockburn?

We match jobs suburb by suburb with licence-checked electricians who do that kind of work.

Why does the power keep dropping out after drizzle?

Light rain or humidity on salty, dusty insulators can start pole top fires. It's a network fault, so report it to Western Power on 13 13 51 rather than calling an electrician.
