Nedlands' houses and network
The final underground projects
The City of Nedlands is working with Western Power on its last three projects, Nedlands West, Nedlands North and Hollywood East, covering about 2000 homes still without underground power. West Nedlands and Nedlands East were done in earlier state rounds.
Hail from Osborne Park to Crawley
On 22 March 2010, hail of 4 to 6 cm fell across Perth, worst from Osborne Park to Crawley. Blocked gutters and drains made flooding worse, and FESA and the SES had more than 3000 calls for help.
Two kinds of housing
There's low-cost student housing near the university and large homes in the south. At the 2021 Census, 75.2% of homes were separate houses, 47.8% had four or more bedrooms and 26.1% were rented.
Solar and batteries in 6009
The Clean Energy Regulator counts 2,690 small-scale solar systems in postcode 6009, and 433 solar batteries recorded from July 2025 to September 2026.
Water in a light, power point or the meter box?
Turn the power off at the main switch if you can reach it safely and dry-handed, and don't switch it back on until a licensed electrician has checked everything that got wet. Call the SES on 132 500 if the storm has damaged the house itself. For fallen lines or a street outage, call Western Power on 13 13 51.
After a storm
Water through a damaged roof or ceiling finds light fittings and downlights first. If lights flicker, a safety switch trips repeatedly, or you smell something hot, leave that circuit off and get it checked.
If the network was hit, Western Power fixes its side. If a long outage lasts 12 continuous hours or more, the State's extended outage payment may apply, with claims due within 60 days.
Student rentals
Every WA rental needs at least two safety switches covering all power and lighting circuits, and compliant smoke alarms before each new lease. Shared student houses run a lot of appliances, so a board that trips often is worth having looked at between tenancies.
Tenants who get a tingle or a shock should report it to Western Power first, then the landlord.
What we'd do in Nedlands
If your street is in one of the last underground projects, we'd use the wait to get the switchboard and meter box checked. If you let a house to students, we'd test the safety switches and check the smoke alarm dates between every tenancy, not just when something goes wrong.
