Electricians in EllenbrookVillage by village, the first solar systems are due a rethink.

Ellenbrook was built village by village, from Woodlake in 1995 to Annie's Landing in 2013. Homes on neighbouring streets can be many years apart, and so can their solar. Upgrade an older system and today's Western Power rules apply. Tell us what you're planning and we'll match you with a licence-checked local electrician who does that work.

Ellenbrook's electrical background

Built in stages

Woodlake (1995), The Bridges (1997), Coolamon (1999), Morgan Fields (2000), Charlotte's Vineyard (2003), Malvern Springs (2006), Lexia (2011) and Annie's Landing (2013).

Fed from Henley Brook

Western Power's Henley Brook substation, just south of the suburb boundary on Gnangara Road, supplies Ellenbrook. Faults still go to Western Power on 13 13 51.

Young and mortgaged

The population grew from 5,478 in 2001 to 24,668 in 2021. At that Census 89.3% of homes were houses, 58.2% were mortgaged and the median age was 32.

Lots of panels

The Clean Energy Regulator counts 13,571 small-scale solar systems in postcode 6069 since 2001.

Not all family houses

There are apartments, micro-lots, townhouses, acreage and over-55s housing too, so a job on one street can look quite different on the next.

What changes when you upgrade solar here

Since 14 February 2022, new or upgraded systems of 5 kW or less on the main WA grid must be able to be turned down or off remotely as a last resort. The State says that's never been needed outside routine testing.

From 1 May 2026, new or upgraded solar and battery systems up to 30 kVA must support modern grid communication standards and remote disconnection. Inverter capacity is capped at 30 kVA in total and 15 kVA on a single-phase connection.

Export stays at 1.5 kW unless your retailer agreement allows up to 5 kW. A battery lets you keep more of what you'd otherwise send out.

Ask before you sign a solar or battery quote

  • Will the upgraded system meet Western Power's May 2026 connection rules?
  • What export limit will I end up with, and does it need a retailer agreement?
  • Does my switchboard need work to take the new inverter or battery?
  • Who lodges the paperwork, and when will I get the Electrical Safety Certificate?
  • What's your EC contractor licence number?

Where we'd start in Ellenbrook

If your system went in during the early villages, we'd have the switchboard and existing wiring looked at as part of any upgrade, not as an afterthought. And if an EV charger is on next year's list, say so now. One load calculation for solar, battery and charger beats three separate ones.

Questions

Straight answers.

Will upgrading my old solar system change my export limit?

It can. Western Power's 2026 rules apply to new or altered systems: export up to 5 kW only under an agreement with your retailer, otherwise 1.5 kW. Ask the installer what limit you'll end up with before you sign.

Can a bidirectional EV charger power my Ellenbrook home?

Western Power treats a charger that can send power back into the home as a generator, so it has to meet the embedded generation rules and AS/NZS 4777. A charger that only draws from the grid counts as ordinary load.
