Ashfield's background
Ausgrid's network
Inner West Council says Ausgrid manages powerline clearing across the Inner West. Outages and fallen lines go to Ausgrid on 13 13 88.
Grand houses, then flats
Ashfield's Victorian houses went up in the late 1800s. Many came down in the 1920s and 1930s for small art deco flats or semis.
Blocks of the 1960s and 1970s
From the 1950s the council started approving large blocks of flats, and many were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Plenty of buildings are protected by heritage orders.
Low solar
In 2021 Inner West Council said just 7% of its listed dwellings had rooftop solar, against 25% across NSW, largely because so many residents live in apartments or rent.
If you own a unit
An EV wall charger needs strata approval, and the building has to follow the Strata Schemes Management Act. A new NSW law will give owners a right to install charging on their own lot without unreasonable objection, once it starts.
In older blocks, the first thing an electrician needs to know is how much spare supply the building has. That's a question for the whole strata, not one owner.
Questions to take to your strata committee
- When was the building's main switchboard last upgraded?
- Has anyone worked out how many chargers the supply can take?
- Are common area smoke alarms and lighting on a maintenance schedule?
- Who keeps the CCEWs for work on common property?
Our advice for Ashfield
If you're thinking about a charger, get the building assessed as a whole before anyone buys hardware. Older Ashfield blocks were built long before cars plugged in, and one plan for the building avoids first-come fights over capacity. We'll match you with a licence-checked electrician who does strata work if we have one nearby.
