Electricians in WahroongaMansions, infill and a lot of trees.

Wahroonga's oldest houses are grand Federation homes built after the railway arrived in the 1890s, and the infill around them kept coming until 1980. So a single street can hold a house from the 1890s and one from the 1970s, each with very different wiring. Under all those trees, storms are the other regular reason people need a sparky here.

Wahroonga's mix of eras

Mansions from the 1890s

Development took off after the North Shore line reached Milsons Point in 1893, and orchard land became large blocks with mansions and big Federation houses.

Infill through to 1980

Subdivision started near the station in the 1920s and spread outward through the 1940s and 1950s, continuing right through to 1980.

Heritage houses

Listed homes include Highlands (1891), Purulia (1913) and the Rose Seidler House (1948 to 1950).

Mostly owner-occupied houses

At the 2021 Census, 74.5% of Wahroonga's 5,785 occupied homes were separate houses, 38.4% were owned outright and 17.8% were rented.

Ausgrid network

Wahroonga is inside Ausgrid's network area. Report outages and lines down to Ausgrid on 13 13 88.

Rewiring a Federation house without wrecking it

The wiring in a house this old has usually been replaced at least once, but often in stages, so it's common to find a modern board feeding a mix of newer and much older cable. An electrician who specialises in older homes will test the circuits, map what's what and suggest a staged plan that avoids opening up decorative ceilings and joinery more than needed.

If the house is heritage-listed or in a conservation area, changes to the outside, like a new meter box position, can need council approval. Ask council before the work is booked.

Storms under the tree canopy

On 21 January 1991 a storm hit Wahroonga with winds of 145 km/h, and 37.5 mm of rain fell in six minutes at Fox Valley. The streets are still heavily treed, and Ku-ring-gai Council asks residents to call Ausgrid whenever trees and power lines are tangled together.

Trees on your own land near the service wire are your responsibility to keep clear, through an accredited contractor. Trees on council land or next door are Ausgrid's to clear.

Where we'd begin

In an older Wahroonga house we'd begin with a full test of the circuits by an electrician who works on heritage-era homes, then plan the rewire room by room. It's slower than ripping everything out, but it protects the house. Tell us your postcode and we'll match one licence-checked local sparky who does this kind of work.

Questions

Straight answers.

How do I know if my old house has been rewired?

Often you can't tell from the switches and power points, which are easy to update. An electrician can test the circuits and look at the cable where it's visible in the roof space and at the board.

A storm knocked out power to just my house. Who do I call?

If neighbours have power, an electrician. If the line to your house is down or damaged, call Ausgrid on 13 13 88 first and keep 8 metres away.

Do I need a safety switch on every circuit?

NSW Fair Trading recommends it, and suggests homes built before 2000 have an electrician check what's fitted.
