Chatswood's homes and power
Ausgrid
Ausgrid's checker lists Ausgrid for 2067. Its fault line is 13 13 88.
Mostly apartments
Flats were 67.6% of homes at the 2021 Census, separate houses 27.9%.
Railway-era houses
Settlement began in 1876 and grew with the North Shore railway in 1890, and again after the Harbour Bridge opened in 1932.
Heritage consent
Willoughby City Council has twelve Heritage Conservation Areas, and development consent is generally required for most changes to buildings in them.
The 2019 storm
On 26 November 2019 power was cut to 52,000 homes in less than 10 minutes. Two days on, Chatswood was still among the worst affected suburbs.
In a conservation area house
Houses from this era have usually been rewired in stages. Cloth or rubber insulated cable can still be in a roof space, feeding a light or two that nobody thought to check.
Inside work, like new circuits, power points or a switchboard upgrade, rarely changes how the house looks. Anything external, like a relocated meter box, outdoor lights or panels on a street-facing roof, is worth raising with Willoughby council before you book.
In an apartment
Most jobs sit inside your unit: lighting, power points, finding a fault. A charger in the basement needs strata approval, and the building's spare capacity decides what's possible.
Our take for Chatswood
In an older house, we'd ask for a full test of the existing wiring before any renovation quote, so old cable doesn't surprise you halfway through. In an apartment, bring the strata manager in early for anything outside your own walls.
