Electricians across the Blue MountainsFire season, storm season and a long winter.

Electrical work in the Blue Mountains follows the seasons. Storms bring lines and branches down, bushfire season raises questions about backup power, and cold winters up top load heaters onto old circuits. The towns run from Glenbrook and Blaxland in the lower mountains to Katoomba and Blackheath at the top.

Living up here, electrically

Towns strung along a ridge

The city is a ribbon of towns along the Great Western Highway and the railway, grouped into lower, mid and upper mountains. About 70% of the council area is national park, and Endeavour Energy runs the network.

Bushfire, often

The RFS calls the Blue Mountains one of the most bush fire prone areas in the world, with about 140 fires a year and major wildfires every 5 to 7 years. In October 2013 the Linksview Road fire destroyed 193 houses, mainly in Winmalee and Yellow Rock.

Wind storms

After the September 2026 wind storm, Endeavour Energy listed the Lower Mountains and Springwood among its hardest-hit repair areas.

Cold winters at the top

Katoomba sits at about 1,010 metres, and the upper mountains get two to three snowfalls a year.

Heritage streets

The council area has 893 heritage items and 36 heritage conservation areas.

Owners, mostly

In 2021, 92.1% of homes were separate houses, 40.9% were owned outright and 17.8% were rented.

The jobs that follow

Heating. An older board feeding heaters, a heat pump and an electric hot water system can trip or run hot on cold nights. A switchboard check is the right first step.

Backup power. Plugging a generator into a power point to feed the house is dangerous, both for you and for line crews. A licensed electrician can fit a proper inlet and changeover switch.

Storm repairs. Damaged fittings, outdoor power and the line from the pole. Work on that service line is done by a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider, which is a NSW accreditation.

Solar. Postcodes 2773, 2774 and 2777 are in stage 2 of Endeavour's flexible exports rollout from 30 November. Katoomba's 2780 isn't in either of the first two stages.

What we'd do before fire season

Get backup power connected properly before you need it, and have outdoor power points and water pumps checked for safety switch protection. Both are quick jobs, and both matter most on the worst day of the year. If there's a licence-checked electrician in your part of the mountains who does this, we'll match you.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can I run my house off a generator during a bushfire outage?

Only through a proper connection fitted by a licensed electrician. Without one, plug appliances directly into the generator, outdoors, and never into a wall power point.

Who do I call when a whole street in Springwood loses power?

Endeavour Energy on 131 003, or check its outage map. An electrician can't restore a network outage.

Why does my safety switch trip on cold, wet nights?

Moisture in an outdoor fitting or an ageing heater element are common causes. Unplug heaters and try again; if it keeps tripping, get an electrician to trace it.
