Electricians in WollongongBetween the escarpment and the sea.
Wollongong runs along a narrow strip between the Illawarra escarpment and the ocean, and it's on Endeavour Energy's network, not Ausgrid's. Sudden heavy rain off the escarpment, older suburbs that grew around coal and steel, and new solar rules all shape the electrical work here. Tell us the job, and we'll match it with one licence-checked local electrician who does it regularly, where we have one.

Wollongong at a glance
Network: Endeavour Energy
Wollongong City Council's disaster dashboard lists Endeavour Energy for power outages. Its emergency line for outages and fallen lines is 131 003, and it says to stay at least eight metres from fallen lines. The NSW SES is on 132 500 for flood and storm help.
Rain off the escarpment
Wollongong's rain is often driven by the escarpment lifting moist easterly air. On 18 August 1998 the city recorded 316 mm and Mt Ousley more than 445 mm, mostly in about three hours.
Storms at both ends of the year
Warmer months bring thunderstorms with lightning, heavy rain and occasionally hail. July and August are the windiest months, when dry westerly gales off the range can gust over 100 km/h. A storm in December 2015 left thousands of homes without power in Bulli, Thirroul and Woonona.
Bushfire on the northern edge
The Black Christmas fires of 2001 to 2002 burned around Helensburgh, Otford and Stanwell Tops, and Helensburgh was evacuated during the Waterfall fire in January 1994.
Suburbs built on coal and steel
Many towns below the escarpment began with cedar cutting or coal mining, and migrants who came for steelworks jobs settled in suburbs like Cringila, Warrawong and Coniston. Cringila's first public school opened in 1935.
The jobs that come up most in Wollongong
Switchboards in older homes. In the suburbs that grew around the mines and the steelworks, check for ceramic fuses and missing safety switches. Black backing boards made before 1987 can contain asbestos, so tell the electrician if yours looks like one. Asbestos switchboards explains how that's handled.
Storm and flood checks. After water or a lightning strike, anything that got wet or tripped needs an electrician's look before it goes back on. Emergency electricians in Wollongong covers who to call first.
Solar upgrades. Postcodes 2500 and 2502 are in stage two of Endeavour Energy's rollout of the new NSW solar backstop requirements, starting 30 November 2026. To use Endeavour's flexible or fixed export plans, a system needs a CSIP-AUS inverter listed by the Clean Energy Council and an active internet connection.
Supply changes. Moving to three-phase, a new connection or a meter box move goes through Endeavour's Connections Portal and usually involves a Level 2 provider. See Level 2 electricians in Wollongong.
Units. At the 2021 Census, 18.5% of occupied homes in the council area were flats or apartments. In NSW, a wall charger in an apartment needs strata approval, so anything on common property starts with the committee.
A quick check on the licence
In NSW, any electrical wiring work has to be done by, or under the supervision of, a licensed electrician. Service NSW's licence check lets you search by name, licence number, ABN or suburb before anyone starts, and that's part of how we check the electricians we match.
Our take for Wollongong homes
We'd save 131 003 in every phone, because Ausgrid's number won't help you here. If you're planning solar in 2500 or 2502, ask the installer about the backstop rules before you sign. And in an older house below the escarpment, we'd have the switchboard checked before adding anything that draws a lot of power.

Questions
Straight answers.
Is Wollongong on Ausgrid?
No. Wollongong and the Illawarra are on Endeavour Energy's network. Its outage and emergency line is 131 003, and it posts real-time status on an online outage map.
What's changing for solar in Wollongong?
Endeavour is rolling out the new NSW solar backstop requirements by postcode, and 2500 and 2502 are in stage two from 30 November 2026. Under Endeavour's flexible exports, eligible homes can export 10 kW per phase most of the time, while its fixed plan allows 1.5 kW. Ask your installer which suits your system.
Will I get a smart meter?
Probably, in time. On Endeavour's network your retailer installs and maintains smart meters and replaces faulty older ones, and NSW homes are set to move to smart meters by 2030.
