Unplug computers and TVs while you wait, so they're not connected when the power comes back.
Get water damage checked
Anything electrical that took on water stays off until a licensed electrician has tested it.

Built on the hills
Settlers arrived from the 1860s and mostly built on the higher ground, because the coast was flood-prone.
A railway holiday town
The line to Sydney was finished in 1888, and Thirroul filled with boarding houses and holiday cottages. Wyewurk, where D. H. Lawrence stayed in 1922, is the earliest Australian bungalow to show the Californian Bungalow style.
Storm history
Storms and floods hit the area hard in August 1998, and the 16 December 2015 storm cut power to thousands of homes around Bulli, Thirroul and Woonona.
Who lives here
At the 2021 Census, 75.5% of homes were separate houses, 40.8% were owned outright and 19.8% were rented.

What Thirroul homes need
Storm and surge protection. Warm-season thunderstorms bring lightning to this stretch of coast. Whole-house surge protection at the switchboard is worth asking about if the board has room.
Old cottages. Holiday cottages from the railway era have often been extended and rewired in stages. A full test finds the old circuits that got left behind.
Solar changes. From 30 November 2026, new and upgraded systems in 2515 need a CSIP-AUS inverter and an internet connection to use Endeavour's export plans.
If it were our Thirroul cottage
We'd get the board done first, with safety switch protection on every circuit and surge protection if there's room. After that, the storms become an inconvenience rather than an emergency call.
