Strathpine, then and now
Army camp, then estates
The population boomed in the 1940s around Camp Strathpine, a wartime army camp and airfield. Brisbane's growth reached it in the 1960s, numerous estates were marketed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and Strathpine Centre opened in 1983.
The council's old home
Strathpine was the centre of Pine Rivers Shire from 1889 to 2008, and the City of Moreton Bay still has offices there.
Houses, mostly owner-occupied
At the 2021 Census, 82.3% of homes were separate houses and 4.4% flats. 39.3% were owned with a mortgage and 30.7% rented.
Flash floods without a warning service
The Bureau says the Pine and Caboolture systems are prone to flash flooding that can do significant property damage, in the middle reaches as well as up in the hills.
Before the next big rain
- Know where the main switch is, and how to turn it off if it's safe to reach without standing in water.
- Press the test button on each safety switch, so you know they work.
- Keep extension leads and power boards off floors that have flooded before.
- Save Energex's numbers: 13 62 62 for outages, 13 19 62 for lines down.
If water has come through
Leave off anything that got wet, from power points to the hot water system, until a licensed electrician has tested it. Floodwater leaves silt and moisture behind that can cause a fault days later. An electrician who does storm and flood repairs can tell you what needs replacing.
The other usual jobs
A board from the estate years may still have fuses or only partial safety switch protection, which matters as soon as you add an air conditioner or induction cooktop. Smoke alarms are the other one: every Queensland home needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by 1 January 2027.
If it were our Strathpine house
We'd get the switchboard checked and the smoke alarms done in one visit this year, and make sure everyone at home knows where the main switch is. With no Bureau warning service for the Pine River, those few minutes of preparation matter more than usual.
