Sunnybank, from the railway on
A railway town first
Sunnybank got its name when the railway was extended from Yeerongpilly in 1885. The town was surveyed in 1886, with 50 parcels offered for sale in 1887, and it joined the City of Brisbane in 1925.
Houses, not units
At the 2021 Census, 85.8% of homes were separate houses, 13.1% townhouses or semis and just 0.7% flats. The median age was 35.
Owners and renters, side by side
39.4% of homes were rented, 35.2% owned outright and 21.1% owned with a mortgage. On Census night, 8.4% of private dwellings were empty.
Supply
Energex runs the network here, from the NSW border up to Gympie. Report an outage on 13 62 62.
Getting a big house ready for the 2027 smoke alarm rules
Count the rooms
You need an alarm in every bedroom, in each hallway joining bedrooms to the rest of the house, and on every storey. In a five-bedroom, two-storey home that adds up quickly.
Check what's there now
Queensland's fire service says to replace any alarm with an ionisation sensor, any that isn't interconnected, and any older than 10 years. Look for AS 3786-2014 on the label.
Pick wired or wireless
If the current alarms are hardwired, the new ones must be hardwired by an electrician. Wireless alarms with a non-removable 10-year battery are the other option.
Book before the rush
The deadline for every home is 1 January 2027. Rentals have needed compliant alarms at each new or renewed lease since 1 January 2022.
If the house sits empty for a while
Some Sunnybank houses spend time empty: 8.4% of private dwellings were unoccupied on Census night. When you come back to one, or before new tenants move in, press the test button on each safety switch and test the smoke alarms. If a safety switch won't reset, or something smells hot, leave it off and get an electrician in.
Our advice for Sunnybank
In a large house, we'd do the smoke alarms and a switchboard check in the same booking, because the electrician will be in every room anyway. Landlords, aim for the gap between leases, and ask for the certificate of testing and compliance for your records.
