Everton Park, in four facts
A postwar suburb
Brisbane City Council's heritage citation for the Poultney Residence says the postwar boom spread here as estates went in on cleared bushland, and the local sawmills closed.
Then a wave of units
The same citation records more subdivision and nearby units in the 1980s and 1990s. At the 2021 Census, 25.1% of homes were semi-detached or townhouses and 14.5% were flats.
Four in ten rented
40.4% of Everton Park's occupied homes were rented in 2021, above the 34.8% across the ABS Brisbane North area.
On Energex's network
Everton Park sits inside the South East Queensland network Energex runs. A dead street goes to Energex on 13 62 62, and a fallen line to 13 19 62.
What usually brings a sparky to an Everton Park house
An original switchboard. Queensland's asbestos guidance says homes built before the mid-1980s are highly likely to contain asbestos materials, and it suggests a warning sticker on the switchboard or in the meter box. If your board has a dark backing panel, leave it be and mention it when you book.
Smoke alarms before 1 January 2027. Every Queensland home needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by then. If yours are hardwired now, the replacements must be hardwired too, and that part is an electrician's job.
Safety switches in rentals. If a rented home has no approved safety switch on the power points, the owner has 90 days from the start of the tenancy to have one fitted.
Townhouse and unit boards. In a strata complex, check with the body corporate before work touches anything shared, like a main board or common cabling.
Worth asking before you say yes
- Have you worked on postwar boards that might have asbestos backing, and how will you handle it?
- Will the quote put a safety switch on every power point circuit?
- Can the smoke alarms be done in the same visit?
- What's your contractor licence number, and will I get a certificate of testing and compliance?
Where we'd start in Everton Park
In an original house, we'd have the switchboard looked at first and fold the smoke alarms into the same booking. That one visit covers the two things most likely to hold up anything else you want done.
